Even if your child knows the "right" thing to do when they are calm, they physically cannot access that knowledge when dysregulated. They also cannot learn new lessons or absorb consequences in this state.

The same thing happens in reverse for your child. Their sense of safety is subjective to their environment and your emotional state.
How to Sequence Boundaries & Discipline Correctly:
Co-Regulate First: Help them return to a feeling of physical safety. Lower your tone, reduce words, and provide grounded physical support.
Restore Baseline: Wait until their sympathetic alarm system turns off and their cognitive brain comes back online.
Teach & Apply Boundaries Second: Apply consequences, teach alternative behaviors, or discuss boundaries only after they are calm and regulated.
